Marietta Professional Firefighters Scholarship Fund

The purpose of the Scholarship Fund is to provide scholarships to students enrolled in an accredited college, or university, or trade school/program who are dependents of Current or retired personnel of the Marietta Fire Department who have met the minimum requirements regarding contributions to the fund.

Applications are due each year after January 1 and no later than March 30 at Midnight.

(Beginning January 1, 2025)

Eligibility

Applicant’s parent (current or retired) must have been a member of the scholarship fund with active donations (of any amount) for a minimum of 6 months prior to applying.

Applicant must be a dependent (as described by the Internal Revenue Code) of a member or retired member of the Marietta Fire Department for the City of Marietta, Ga.

Applicant must be between the ages of 16-23 years old at the time of application.

Applicant must be accepted by and enrolled in an accredited college, university, or trade school/program.

Applicants who have completed at least one semester of college/university/trade school study must remain in “good standing” with the school system.

All applicants must meet all listed criteria.

Applicant shall re-apply annually.

Additional Information / Consideration

After the first year of college/university/trade school study- further consideration will be based on the student’s “good standing” with the school system

Selection is made without regard to gender, race, national origin, creed, age, marital status or disability.

Scholarship monies will be granted on a yearly basis and applicants shall re-apply annually for additional scholarships.

Subsequent applications require a new essay about a different topic than previous essays.

Scholarship grants will be transferred directly to the student account in the bursar’s office of the college, university, or trade school for tuition, books, or other school expenses. No outright distributions will be made. Should the recipient fail or drop out of the college or university (or drop below full-time status as defined by the college or university) the scholarship will immediately be terminated and funds returned to the Marietta Fire Fighters Scholarship Fund. If a trade school/program does not have a traditional bursar’s office and payment cannot be made directly to the school, the scholarship will be held and awarded directly to the applicant after proof of successful completion has been presented.

Scholarship Award Range

Up to $1,000.00. No more than 4 times.

Monies are awarded based on the annual fiscal longevity of the scholarship fund compared to the number of applicants for that given year. In the event that the fund is not able to award $1,000 scholarships to all applicants, the dollar amount of all awards will decrease by the same amount. If the award amount drops below $600 those that have received two or more scholarships will no longer be eligible. Their eligibility status can be reinstated if the fund is able to award $600 or greater to all applicants.

Awards Notification and Disbursement

Award notifications will be made via email and phone calls. An attempt will be made to present the award to the recipient at their school awards function.

Disbursement of funds will be made directly to the bursar's office once enrollment has been verified, before the start of the school year.

Applicants must attach an essay of 500 words or more on the following topic, corresponding to your year in school (i.e. Freshmen/First to Senior/Fourth)

FRESHMAN Topic: Tell us about yourself, what brought you to this school or program and what is your current career plan.

SOPHMORE Topic: Tell us about your experience so far. Ideas: What have you learned about yourself, your study habits, or changes you have had to make? What are some things you do and don’t like about your school, the classes, the workload?

JUNIOR Topic: Planning for your third year, what are you going to do to set yourself apart from your peers? Will you be doing any internships, are you currently working within your field of study industry? What can you do to better position yourself for a job offer when you have finished school?

SENIOR Topic:
Tell us what your plans are for when you finish your 4th year. Will you go to a graduate program? If so, why did you make that decision and what will you be studying? Will you be looking for a job? Do you already have any job offers? If so, how did the job offer come to be? Was it through an internship, job fair, or personal connections?
